Welcome to Hibiscus, publisher of Come Tears, Come Smiles, the sweeping story of three generations of a Chinese family in Penang, from British colonial rule, through Japanese occupation, Communist insurgency, and Merderka (Independence). It is a mix of domestic drama, violence and tragedy set against a panorama of horrific historical events, growing business empires and corruption. It is a fascinating story of how life changed over the years, particularly for women: how men and women never understand each other.
